Common Questions
Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about the Remove Line Breaks tool.
How do I remove line breaks from text?
Paste your text into the input box on our homepage, choose your preferred mode (we recommend Preserve Paragraphs), and the cleaned text appears instantly. Click Copy or Download to save the result.
How do I remove line breaks but keep paragraphs?
Select 'Preserve Paragraphs (Smart Mode)' — this is the default option and the recommended choice for most users. It removes single line breaks (mid-sentence wrapping from PDFs or Word) while keeping double line breaks that signal real paragraph separations.
Why does text copied from a PDF have random line breaks?
PDFs store text as individually positioned elements on a page — line by line — not as flowing paragraphs. When you copy text, every visible line-end becomes a newline character, even mid-sentence. Our tool removes these automatically.
Is my text safe and private when I use this tool?
Yes, completely. All processing happens 100% in your browser using JavaScript. Your text is never sent to any server, never stored, and never logged. It is fully private and safe for confidential documents.
Can I remove line breaks from a large document?
Yes. There is no hard character limit. The tool shows a soft performance warning for very large texts (above ~100,000 characters) and pauses live-preview, but you can still process by clicking Remove Line Breaks. Multi-page documents work fine.
What is the difference between removing all line breaks and preserving paragraphs?
'Remove All' collapses the entire text into one continuous block — useful when you want everything on one line. 'Preserve Paragraphs' keeps intentional double-newline paragraph breaks but removes single line breaks from line-wrapping. This is the better choice for most use cases.
What is Batch Mode?
Batch Mode lets you process multiple separate text blocks at once. Separate each document or section with --- on its own line, enable the Batch toggle, and click Remove Line Breaks. All sections are cleaned and returned together. None of our competitors offer this feature.
What is the Smart PDF mode?
Smart PDF mode analyzes each line ending. Lines ending with a sentence-terminating character (., !, ?, :) are treated as real paragraph breaks and kept. Lines ending mid-sentence are treated as wrap artifacts and removed. This produces much better results for messy OCR or scanned PDF text.
What are the Advanced Cleanup Options?
The Advanced section has 8 stackable toggles: remove extra blank lines, trim line whitespace, collapse extra spaces, remove/convert tabs, remove Unicode/non-breaking spaces (common in Word/web text), straighten smart quotes and em-dashes, List-Aware mode (keeps breaks before bullets and numbered items), and strip HTML formatting artifacts.
What is the Diff View?
Diff View shows you exactly what changed between your original text and the cleaned output, highlighted inline. Removed content appears with strikethrough in red; added/kept content appears in green. Use it to verify that nothing important was accidentally altered.
Can I undo a process?
Yes. After processing, an Undo button appears next to the Clear button. Click it to restore the previous version of your input. The tool keeps up to 10 undo states.
Does this tool work on mobile?
Yes. The tool is fully responsive and works on phones and tablets. The layout adjusts to a single-column view on smaller screens.
Is this tool really free?
Yes, completely free to use with no character limits, no account required, and no ads in the tool interface. The site is supported by display advertising on surrounding content.
How do I remove line breaks in Microsoft Word?
In Word, use Find & Replace (Ctrl+H). In the Find field, enter ^l (caret + lowercase L) for manual/soft line breaks. In Replace with, enter a space. Click Replace All. For hard paragraph returns, use ^p — but be careful not to remove real paragraph breaks. Alternatively, use our online tool first and paste the cleaned text into Word.
How do I remove line breaks in Google Sheets or Excel?
In Google Sheets, use the SUBSTITUTE function: =SUBSTITUTE(A1, CHAR(10), " "). In Excel: =SUBSTITUTE(A1, CHAR(10), " "). For bulk cleanup of pasted text (not cell formulas), use our online tool — paste cell content as text, clean it, and paste it back.
